Tata Electronics, PSMC Partners to Build AI-Enabled Fab in Gujarat

Tata Groups owned Tata Electronics partnered with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) on Friday, to supply the advanced greenfield facility in Dholera, Gujarat with technology and operational assistance.

The company said the new semiconductor fabrication facility (Fab) will produce chips for applications like power management integrated circuits (IC), display drivers, microcontrollers (MCU) and high-performance computing logic.

Tata Electronics also said this could result in serving the worldwide semiconductor markets in domains of artificial intelligence, computing, communications, and automobiles. To achieve industry-best factory efficiency, Fab will be able to produce up to 50,000 wafers per month at a total investment of up to ₹91,000 Crores ($11 billion).

The Fab construction is expected to start this year and create over 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs in the area, added the electronics firm.

The semiconductor industry is booming, with expected average annual growth of 6% to 8% through 2030 and yearly revenues forecasted to reach $1 trillion, stated McKinsey & Company.

A week ago, domestic peer HCLTech collaborated with Intel Foundry semiconductor manufacturing to co-develop customized silicon solutions for semiconductor manufacturers, to improve foundry services.

“By 2030, global semiconductor industry is expected to grow to US$ 1 trillion and Indian semiconductor demand is expected to cross US$110bn,” said Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and continued, “This will also accelerate our progress towards providing high-technology employment opportunities for the youth of India.”
