Sharp to Invest About $5 Bln in Display Fab Factory, Says Times of India

Japanese electronics company Sharp said it is planning an investment of $3 billion to $5 billion to establish a display fabrication unit in India, reported the Times of India on Saturday.

The proposed 1,000-acre plant will fill the need for exports and domestic production, serving as a global manufacturing hub, added the news report.

The electronics industry, today, highly relies on semiconductors, which are essential parts that control and regulate the flow of electricity in electronic devices and equipment.

The advanced series 10 displays, which are used to make televisions and other digital screens, will be produced by the display fabrication unit, said the report of Times of India and added, that the ongoing elections may cause the proposal’s final approval to take up to 10 months.

According to a study by the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation (ITIF), semiconductors are the modern global digital economy. This industry is predicted to increase to $588 billion by 2024, stimulate an additional $7 trillion in global economic activity annually, and support a range of downstream applications like artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.

In March, Tata Electronics partnered with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to supply the advanced greenfield facility in Dholera, Gujarat with technology and operational assistance.

Founded in 1912, Sharp is headquartered in Sakai, Osaka, Japan. It focuses largely on manufacturing and sales of telecommunications equipment, electric and electronic application equipment, and components.
