Switzerland Signs NASA’s Artemis Accords

Space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), on Monday, said Switzerland became the 37th country to sign the Artemis Accords at NASA Headquarters in Washington affirming Switzerland’s commitment to the sustainable and beneficial use of space for all humankind.

The Artemis Accords were established in 2020 in coordination with the U.S. Department of State, as an international cooperative effort to ensure safe and prosperous lunar exploration. The campaign was formed together with seven other founding member nations including Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, UAE and more.

The agreement was signed by Guy Parmelin, Swiss Federal Councilor, along with the presence of various delegates, said the space explorer.

Prior to Switzerland, in February, Uruguay signed the Artemis Accords, where Omar Paganini, foreign minister, signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of Uruguay in the presence of Nelson and various international dignitaries.

The Accords reinforce the 1968 Treaty in Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and use of outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies otherwise known as the Outer Space Treaty, said NASA.

“As we welcome you into the Artemis Accords family, we expand our commitment to explore the unknown openly and peacefully, discovery strengthens goodwill on Earth, and we are excited to expand our countries’ shared values and principles to the Cosmo,” said Bill Nelson, Administrator at NASA.
