Amazon’s online medications delivery Amazon Pharmacy, on Tuesday, launched same-day delivery of prescription medication in New York City and the greater Los Angeles area. The firm also aims to expand its services to all parts of United States cities by the end of 2024.
Amazon Pharmacy along with the chemists have employed generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and machine learning (ML) to identify handwritten prescriptions to fast-track the process with accuracy, said the firm.
AI can streamline prep work that historically would take hours down to mere minutes or even seconds, and reduce administrative errors, noted Kelvin Downes, Director of fulfillment for Amazon Pharmacy.
“We have got a machine learning algorithm that allows the customers to see their insurance price as an estimate while browsing,” added Downes.
Amazon Pharmacy is equipped with small-format facilities located in Brooklyn, stocked with common prescription medications for acute conditions, said the global e-commerce firm. Additionally, customers can order the medicine from Amazon.com, which will be delivered within hours.
The pharmaceutical delivery wing of Amazon has collaborated with Prime Air, Amazon’s drone delivery system, to ensure instant transfer of prescriptions, said the company. In places with more traffic like Manhattan, delivery workers will ride e-bikes and in College Station, home to Texas A&M University, drones may be employed. All-electric vans and other commercial vehicles will be used in suburban areas.
The pharmacy and fulfillment center are connected, allowing the pharmacy team to clinically evaluate a new prescription, and dispense the medication, Amazon said.
