Meta Tests AI Chatbot across WhatsApp, Instagram

Facebook parent company Meta, on Sunday, began testing its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Meta AI, with users based in India and parts of Africa.

This chatbot, power-driven by a large language model (LLM), is now being tested on WhatsApp and Instagram. The move demonstrates Meta’s goal of leveraging its enormous user base across many platforms to scale its AI offerings.

Meta AI, which was introduced in September 2023, is a general-purpose assistant created primarily for deep learning recommendation models that improve a variety of experiences across apps and technologies.

Based on news reports, it not only responds to user requests directly in chats, but it also generates photorealistic graphics from word prompts.

Meta AI provides unique viewpoints on topics ranging from travel to gaming to food. Users in India have reported signs of Meta AI on Instagram and WhatsApp. Meanwhile, users from Nigeria confirmed the update in their social media applications.

Recently, Meta-owned Instagram said it is testing a new feature to eliminate sextortion and intimate image abuse for its teen users, which will make it more difficult for potential scammers as well as criminals to find and interact with teens.

In early April, Press Trust of India (PTI) joined Meta’s third-party fact-checking partnership (3PFC) program to identify, review and rate content as misinformation across the social media company’s applications including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

McKinsey research indicates that gen AI applications stand to add up to $4.4 trillion to the global economy annually.

Meta’s AI chatbot has made its presence known on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, providing a glimpse into the future of AI-powered interactions on these platforms. It appears that anything in technology, media, and telecommunication sectors among others would be considered antiquated or ineffectual in the absence of AI’s touch.
